Deportation analysts

Summery: Since taking office in July 2024, the Labour government has deported over 16,400 individuals, marking the highest six-month total since 2018. This figure includes 2,580 foreign nationals with criminal convictions, representing a 23% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that swift returns serve as a more effective deterrent than the previous Conservative administration’s unimplemented Rwanda scheme, which was projected to cost £600 million to relocate 300 individuals. The Home Office also reported a 24% rise in enforced returns compared to the prior 12 months, with more than half of the 16,400 individuals opting for voluntary departure. Despite these efforts, challenges persist, as over 36,800 people made unauthorized crossings into the UK in 2024, a 25% increase from the previous year.
